---Open with Laura running down a hallway, holding onto another woman--- <> Laura: Ethaniel, where is he? Byder: You shouldn't see him like this. Laura: What? Byder: Listen. Laura: Damn it let me go. Byder: Listen to me. He's a lot worse. Laura: How bad? <> ---Cut to guy in labcoat (Dr. Tremblay) with medical equipment--- Dr. Tremblay: I'm losing him. ---Back to Laura, who pushes past Byder and runs into the room, and up to a big fishtank, with a body floating in it.--- Dr. Tremblay: Clear. <> Dr. Tremblay: Clear. <> Laura: No. Dr. Tremblay: Clear. <> Dr. Tremblay: Gone. Gone. <> Dr. Tremblay (in background): Time of death, 5:47 am. Laura: Ethaniel. ----- Titles ----- Cameron Bancroft as Ethaniel Ingrid Kavelaars as Dr. Laura Keating Gordon Currie as Dent Joseph Baldwin as Byder Olivier Gruner as Tawrens Andrew Gillies as Banning ---- 24 Hours ----- ---Open on Laura with hand on tank--- ---Dissolve to ship--- ---Laura walks through rooms with a phone in hand, dialling--- Voice on phone: The cellular customer you are trying to reach is not in the service area. Please try again. <> Laura: Byder, Ethaniel said he'd be back a long time ago. I'm worried. <> Laura: Byder, wake up. <> Laura: Ethaniel said he'd be back a long time ago. I'm worried. You go look for him, I'm going to wait here. Byder: I'm not going to look for him. Laura: Why not? Byder: Because he doesn't want to be looked for. <> Laura: How do you know that? Byder, how do you know that? <> Byder: What are you panicking about? Laura: I knew I should have gone with him to see Thorber. <> Byder: Look, Laura, he said it was private. <> Byder: He had to go alone. Now, it's a big moment for him. Laura: He said he'd be back at 10, it's a quarter to 12. Voice (from downstairs): AAARRGH! Byder: What the hell is that? <> Laura: Ethaniel where have you been. <> Laura: Thorber! Thorber: Something's wrong. ---Looking at Ethaniel through a fishtank (small, round tank with actual fish - not the tank from the start)--- Byder: Hey buddy, you don't look so good. <> Ethaniel: Let go of me. <> Laura (yelling): What's wrong with him, why is he acting like this? <> Thorber: Get back. <> Ethaniel: Get your hands off me! <> Thorber: His pulse is weak and thready. <> Thorber: He's got a fever of a hundred and five. Thorber (to Byder): Could you turn the air conditioning on please. Byder: Yeah. <> Byder: Can't you give him something, like aspirin, or... Thorber: I don't know how he'd react to human anti-fever drugs or anti-biotics. It's too risky. <> Laura: He's hurt. <> Byder: Lipstick. Thorber (to Byder): Soak some towels and bring some ice please. <> Laura: Tell me what's going on. Thorber: Look, I have no idea. Lets get him to the bedroom. <> Thorber (who mumbles too much for this to make any sense!): We were supposed to meet, he didn't show I started looking for him. Found your car at the side of the street with him inside but it was completely deserted. Laura: I've never seen a fever this bad. We should take him to the hospital. <> Thorber: No. Banning would know about it by morning. Laura: Help me take his coat off. <> Laura: I'm glad you found him. <> Byder: I've got ice packs, hope there's enough ice. Laura: Tell us again, what happened? Thorber: I have no idea. I found him in your car, in the drivers seat delirious and incoherent. <> Laura: Ethaniel, we're going to cool you down now. <> Ethaniel: What are you doing to me? Thorber: We're trying to help. Calm down. <> Thorber (to Ethaniel): I'm sorry. Byder (to Laura): You alright? <> Byder: Oh, what the hell is this? <> Laura: Thorber, what is this? Thorber: He's reverting. Byder: Well, what the hell does that mean? Thorber: He's becoming Theran again. Look, Therans in Theran form can't survive on this planet. Laura: How can we help him? Thorber: I don't know. I'm a scientist not a doctor. Byder: Thorber, come on, what can we do here? Laura: There's got to be someone we can contact. You've got to have a medical contact here. Thorber: There is somebody. Byder: Who? Thorber: Dr Tremblay, he used to work for Banning. Like me, he ran when we found out what Banning was up to. Byder: Alright, so... Laura: He can be trusted? Thorber: We don't have a choice do we? ---Cut to Laura driving a car, Byder and Thorber are in the back, with Ethaniel held down between them--- Laura: What kind of practice does this doctor operate? Thorber: You can't really call it a practice. He helps people who've suffered at Banning's hands. <> Laura: Why didn't you tell us that? Thorber: I am telling you. ---Cut to Thorber and Laura carrying Ethaniel down a hallway, Byder behind them, approaching a guy in a labcoat (Dr. Tremblay)--- Dr. Tremblay: Whoah, whoah, whoah, stop, stop. Thorber, who are these people? Thorber: They're friends. He's my brother, he needs help. Dr. Tremblay: Alright, come on. This way. <> ---Cut to stairs, going down, coming out into lab area--- Dr Tremblay: Thorber, so, you're sure no-one followed you, right? Thorber: Yes I'm sure. <> Dr. Tremblay: Turn it up Thorber. What can you tell me about him? Thorber: His human form was supposed to last at least ten years before reverting. Now as he reverts, the earth's atmosphere will be toxic to him. If we don't stop this, he'll die. Dr. Tremblay: What do you expect me to do? I don't know anything about Theran anatomy. Is he a carbon based creature, does he have a respiratory system? Byder: Thorber, you created the shift to begin with, why can't you just do it again? Thorber: I can't shift him back until I know what's causing it. Dr. Tremblay: Okay, okay, we'll do some blood work, and start an IV. (to Byder) Hang me that bag. Laura: Okay, he's getting worse, it's spread to his arm. Dr. Tremblay: We need to make a vaccine. I'll need some healthy Theran blood. Thorber: Well take mine. At this rate he'll be Theran by morning, if he lives that long. Dr. Tremblay: Lets get him, lets cool him down here. Thorber: Cool him down. <> Dr. Tremblay: It's remarkable Thorber: What? Dr. Tremblay: Thorber, his, er, white cell count is being replaced by a blue cell count. Thorber: This isn't right. Therans don't usually have blue blood either. Only when they're exposed to some kind of infection. Laura: I thought your, your blood was immune to human disease. Thorber: So did I. Laura: Okay, this could be something Banning did. Byder: Yeah, it'd be just like Banning to make a virus that kills his enemies. Dr. Tremblay: No, Banning would never risk making something that could be used against himself. Thorber: Ethaniel must have come into contact with some kind of contagion on the way from the marina to our meeting place. It's the only explanation. Dr. Tremblay: Yes, but it must be viral, it could be anything. Laura: Okay, lets figure it out. Lets just retrace his steps. <> Laura: Lets find out what Mandie has to say. Thorber: Who's Mandie? <> Laura: Byder, you stay here with the Doctor. <> Byder: Doc, I need internet access. Doc! The internet. <> ---Cut to Laura and Thorber entering a club--- Hostess: I'm sorry sir, you can't go in. We have a dress code. Laura: Don't you know who this is? Rupert Belaje. Hostess: We have a dress code. Laura: Nobel peace prize. Autobiography. Rupert Belaje, animemungus. He wears what he wants. We're already late, bye. Hostess: Please. <> Laura: I'll take the bartender. Bartender: What can I get you. Laura: Yeah, I'm looking for someone, maybe you've seen him. <> Laura: I think he was here earlier between 10 and 12. Bartender: Lets see a badge. Laura: I'm not a cop. Bartender: Then I'm afraid I can't help you. <> Laura: Maybe you don't understand. When the health department undertakes an investigation, we're pretty thorough. Bartender (laughing): Health department! Laura: We have the man lying in intesive care at County General who we think he was here tonight. He might have contracted something in your establishment. Something your patrons are liable to catch. Bartender: He was here, he came by with one of our waitresses. He used the john, and then he left. Laura: Left alone? Bartender: Yeah, I think. Laura: Which waitress? Bartender: Mandie. But, she's not here any more. Laura: Damn it. Thorber (to waitress): I'm trying to find somebody. Her name is Mandie. I was told she's here tonight. Waitress: I've already told you I can't help you. Thorber: I'm only asking for a few seconds of your time. You must know her. Waitress: Look, I'm working, and I'm busy. <> Thorber: Look. I'm sorry, I'm sorry. This is just really important, do you understand? <> Thorber: What is your problem? Why won't you talk to me? <> Waitress: Leave me alone. Waitress: You can not come in here. Thorber: My brother is dying. Laura: Where's Mandie? Waitress: She left. Laura: How did she seem? Did she seem sick? Waitress: She was, she was stressed out about something, so we sent her home. Thorber: Where's she live? Waitress: Are we living in the fifties? Do you really think I'm going to give you someone's address? <> Laura: Why would he be with Mandie, it's not like Ethaniel. Is it? I mean, you know him better than I do. Thorber: He was on his way to meet me. And I can't imagine he'd do anything different unless he had a damned good reason. Laura: Right. He's been really looking forward to seeing you. Thorber: Come on, lets go. ---Back to them with the waitress--- Thorber: Look, the man who was here tonight is my brother. Something happened to him, and we think that Mandie might know something about it. Waitress: What happened? Thorber: He got sick. Mandie might know what he was exposed to. Laura: You might be exposed yourself. You willing to take a chance with your life? Please, tell us where we can find her. Thorber: Please Waitress: She has an apartment near here. <> Waitress: You didn't hear it from me. And she has a boyfriend. Big, big guy. And he could beat the crap out of you if you try anything stupid. Thorber: Thank you. ---Cut to Laura and Thorber walking down an apartment block hallway--- Laura: Why did you go meet Ethaniel? Thorber: I've been thinking, it'd be much easier to defeat Banning if we joined forces. Laura: Good <> Man: Mandie? Who the hell are you? Its 3 in the morning. Laura: It's an emergency, we need to talk to her. Woman: Is that her? <> Man: Get the hell out of my place. Woman: Like hell it's your place! Man: I said get the hell out of my... <> Man: Argh! Argh! Thorber (to woman): We're looking for Mandie. Woman: Huh Laura: Did he hit you? Woman: I never gave him the chance. <> Woman: He don't live here. Laura: And you do? Woman: Me and Mandie split the rent. <> Woman: What do you want her for? Laura: We just want to talk to her. That's all. Woman: Is Mandie in trouble? Laura: No. A friend of ours is sick and we think they were together tonight. Thorber (pointing to other woman in picture): Is this Mandie? Woman: Yeah. <> Laura: Thanks Thorber: Do you have some place where you can sty tonight? Woman: No, but there's somewhere else he can stay tonight (starts kicking man) and every night from now on. Thorber: Thank you very much for your help. <> ---BREAK--- (15.23-17.30) ---Open on disco. People dancing, strobe lights, dance music, lots of jump cuts around crowd--- <> Thorber: Excuse me. Guy: Scuse you dude. Thorber: She'll get back to you later. <> Thorber: Are you Mandie? Mandie: Who the hell are you? Thorber: You met my brother earlier tonight. Laura: You took him to work. Mandie: Ohhhh, sweet. He left before I could get his number. Hey, next time you see your brother, give him this for me. <> Laura: Where did you meet Ethaniel. Mandie: He beat the snot out of my boyfriend. <> Mandie (at bar): Water. Thorber: Ethaniel did what? Mandie: Boyfriend - ex-boyfriend was harrassing me in the street. Next thing I know your brother drives up and throws him halfway across the park. It was way cool. Thorber: And then what? Mandie: He drove me to work. Laura: To Solstice. Is that all? <> <> Laura: Come on. <> Laura: Damn it. We just had her. Damn it. Lets get out of here. ---Back in lab, Ethaniel is packed in lots of ice, and is now showing lots of blue veins and shiny skin--- Dr. Tremblay: 3.36am. Subject is continuing to revert back to his alien form. The body temperature well over 150 degrees is... He'll melt this ice in no time. Byder: You have to figure something else out Doctor. This isn't working. You are not helping. Dr. Tremblay: Well how do you expect me to do that? Are you forgetting what he is? <> Dr. Tremblay: Here look. This is a normal CT scan. Heart, liver, lungs, spleen. Now... this is Ethaniel. You tell me where anything is. All I can be certain of is that I don't know. Byder: Then figure it out. You're a doctor. Dr. Tremblay: I'm just a crackpot loony who thinks aliens from outer space are invading the earth. Byder: And you're right. Byder (pointing at computer screen): That proves it. Byder (pointing at Ethaniel): This proves it. Now prove you're still a doctor. Dr. Tremblay: I'll try some more blood tests. <> Byder: Laura. Thorber: No, it's Thorber. How's Ethaniel? Byder: Not good Thorber. Theran skin is spreading over half his body. He's burning with fever. Let me put you on speaker phone. Dr. Tremblay: Whatever he came in contact with was topical in origin. Someone or something that he came in contact with. Thorber: The girl who kissed him. Byder: Well bring her here. Dr. Tremblay: We can test her, compare blood samples, for antibodies... contagions. Thorber: Doctor. We lost her. Dr. Tremblay: Thorber, you have to find her. Thorber: What do you think we're trying to do here? Byder: You okay Thorber? Thorber: It's been a long day. I just don't want to lose him. Byder: You won't. Thorber: Doctor, can we speak privately? Dr. Tremblay: Yeah. <> Dr. Tremblay: What is it Thorber? Thorber: I think I've contracted the same condition. I'm reverting just like Ethaniel. Dr. Tremblay: You've got to get back here immediately. Thorber: Not 'til we find Mandie. Dr. Tremblay: Listen to me. You're not just endangering yourself. You're endangering Laura as well. You could become irrational, violent. Thorber (getting angry): I am aware of that. <> Thorber: Look, as his body reverts further, it'll get harder for him to breathe. You'll have to simulate a Theran atmosphere. Dr. Tremblay: And how do you propose I should do that? We only have available gasses and liquids here. Thorber: Try immersing him in liquid oxygen. Chill it to minus thirty degrees Celcius. Work something out. Change his surroundings. Change him. Do whatever it takes. Dr. Tremblay: You call me when you find the girl. <> Byder: He's reverting too, isn't he. ---Back to Laura and Thorber in the car--- Laura: How is he? Thorber, how's Ethaniel? Thorber: He's worse. <> ---Back in the lab--- Dr. Tremblay: We've got to er... we've got to.... Help me empty this tank. Here, give me a hand. <> Dr. Tremblay: Yes, come here sweety. <> Byder: What the hell's this going to do? Dr. Tremblay: We're going to put Ethaniel in the tank. Here take this thing. Take this... take this... take the snake. <> Dr. Tremblay: Come on... okay, bye girl. <> Dr. Tremblay: Okay, follow me. <> Byder: Is there any reason why I'm carrying the snake? Dr. Tremblay: Put her in the back there. Quickly. ---Back at Mandie's apartment--- Laura: From now on I drive. Thorber (snarling): I don't care okay. <> Laura: Are you okay? Thorber: Lets just find her. <> ---Inside apartment, Mandie's roommate is hastily packing a bag--- <> Woman: Now what do you want? Thorber: Mandie. Where would Jay take her? Woman: I don't know. <> Thorber: You know where they are and you're going to tell me. Now! <> Laura: Back off. What the hell is wrong with you? Thorber: I'm sorry. Sorry. Laura: Jay took Mandie at the rave. We think she's in trouble. Woman: That sick bastard's always trouble. I don't care any more. I'm out of here. I'm sick of playing referee. <> Thorber: Where are they? Laura (stepping in the way): Thorber! Woman: I don't know. There's a club on Park Road. About three miles north. Both of you, just get the hell out of here. <> ---In hallway, Laura comes on Thorber leaning heavily against a wall--- Laura: You're reverting aren't you? (pause) Why didn't you tell me? (pause) When did it happen? Thorber: Right outside the Brewery. After Mandie kissed me. Laura: How long do you have? Thorber: I don't know. <> Thorber: Take this. Take it. <> Thorber: You saw what happened with Ethaniel. Take it. Please! <> Thorber: Lets find her. ---Ethaniel sinking into fishtank--- Byder: Are you sure this is going to work? Dr. Tremblay: Thorber said the liquid oxygen would provide a stable medium for him. I'm reducing the temperature by one degree every three minutes. Byder: He's breathing in there? Dr. Tremblay: Uhuh. It appears he's taking it in through what's left of his lungs, but he's also breathing through his membranous skin. Amazing. Byder (muffled): Hang in there buddy. <> ---Open on pan across people outside club. Moving inside as Laura and Thorber enter a really dark hallway--- Laura: Are you sure you're up for this? I can go in and try and reason with him. Thorber: We don't have time. Morning's coming. <> Laura (shouting): We're looking for Mandie. <> Thorber: She's with Jay. Where is she? Jay (entering with his arm round Mandie's shoulders): If you're looking for more trouble, you've come to the right place. Thorber: Look, all we want is Mandie. Jay: She ain't going nowhere. Laura (to Mandie): The man who helped you needs you. Jay: You've got two ways to get out of here. One of them includes your head still on your body. Thorber: We can't leave without Mandie, you hear me? Jay: Oh is that so? <> Mandie: Jay, don't. Jay: Shut up. <> Thorber: You're getting out of here. Come on. <> Laura: Thorber. Let him up. Let's go. <> Laura: We're walking out of here. Mandie's coming of her own free will. You understand? Mandie: Later guys. ---In the car--- Mandie: Where are you taking me? Laura: You'll know when you get there. <> Mandie: Oh gross. What is that, psoriasis or something? Laura: I'll explain later. Try to hang in there Thorber. <> ---Ethaniel in fishtank--- Dr. Tremblay: I've never seen anything like it. Byder: How long can he last like this? Dr. Tremblay: His skin is forming a protective coating. On amphibians it's a defensive measure enabling them to survive in the most extreme conditions. Outside their habitat. Increasing, sometimes even doubling their lifespan. Byder: What does that mean for Ethaniel? Truth. Dr. Tremblay: I don't know. He seems to be breathing, but the slowdown of the reversion has been minimal. Can I ask you something? Doesn't this scare you? Byder: Scare me? Dr. Tremblay: Yeah. Byder: What do you mean? Dr. Tremblay: Well, most of the patients I treat, look like you or me. To actually come face to face with one of these fellows is... Byder: I always suspected they were here. And yeah, it terrified me. Dr. Tremblay: Yeah. Byder: Now that I know they're here, it's not so bad. What are his chances? Dr. Tremblay: I don't know, you know, I don't know. I just know that we need something right now. He's cooling though. ---Back in the car, Thorber is thrashing and mumbling--- Mandie: What is he saying, and what is that junk on his neck? Laura: Sit back and shut up. <> Thorber (slumping against a wall): Get inside, go! Laura: I'm not leaving you alone. Thorber: You're not staying out here with me. Go! Go! ---Scene from the start - Laura and Mandie running along upstairs balcony--- Laura: Ethaniel, where is he? Byder (blocking Laura's path): You shouldn't see him like this. Laura: What? Byder: Listen Laura: Damn it let me go. Byder: Listen to me! He's a lot worse. Laura: How bad? <> Dr. Tremblay: I'm losing him! Dr. Tremblay: Clear! <> Clear! <> Clear! <> Gone. Gone. Time of death, five forty seven, a.m. Laura: Ethaniel. Byder (to Doctor): Do something. Dr. Tremblay: What about death don't you understand? Byder: Do something. Dr. Tremblay: What about dead... <> Dr. Tremblay: You think of something. Byder: Think of something. Dr. Tremblay: I could try to resuscitate him all night, but it's not going to bring him back. <> Dr. Tremblay: Clear! <> Dr. Tremblay (tapping glass): Buddy! He's back! <> Dr. Tremblay: He's back! He's back! Byder: How's Thorber? Laura: Not good! Dr. Tremblay (grabbing Mandie and pushing her): You! What childhood diseases have you had? Mandie: None of your business! Dr. Tremblay: Have you ever had the measles? Mandie: No Dr. Tremblay: Malaria? Mandie: No! Dr. Tremblay: The mumps? Mandie: No! Dr. Tremblay: Any STDs? <> Dr. Tremblay: Okay, which one? (pause while Mandie doesn't answer) I need your help. ---Thorber in upstairs hallway, clutching neck in pain--- ---Back in lab, Dr. Tremblay looking through microscope, Mandie rubbing arm--- Mandie: I didn't even have sex with these guys. I don't know why you needed to take my blood. Dr. Tremblay: Differential WBC showing lymphocytes and monocytes suggestive of what? That's it! That's it. Laura: What is it? Dr. Tremblay: It's the Epstein Barr virus. Mononucleosis. Mandie: Yeah, that was months ago. ---Upstairs, Thorber in pain, kicks down a wall and disappears into the opening--- ---Back in lab--- Byder: Mono? Dr. Tremblay: Yes, who's to say how the virus will interact with his body chemistry. Now we take the antibodies from her blood and mix it with the clean alien blood and there we have it. Our vaccine! Mandie: Alien? What, like Close Encounters of the Third Kind? Alien 3? E.T... <> Laura: Mandie. Mandie! Mandie: What! Laura: You don't have to go back to him! Mandie: Mind your own business. My sister lives near here. I'm just going to grab a cab. Laura: Good. About the alien thing... Mandie: Don't worry. I'm going to forget it ever happened. <> Laura: Thorber. It's me. Laura. Thorber. Let her go. <> Laura: Thorber. Please. Let. Her. Go. Don't make me do this. Mandie: Shoot! Laura: Let her go! I'm not going to hurt you. Thorber, you know it's me. Ethaniel needs you now more than ever. <> Thorber: Ethaniel! Laura: They know what it is. <> ---Downstairs--- Dr. Tremblay: Thorber. We only have enough vaccine to affect one of you. Laura: That's not good enough. Dr. Tremblay: I think we should give it to cure Thorber. He's less infected, more likely to make a full recovery. Laura: What about Ethaniel? Dr. Tremblay: Once Thorber's cleared, then we can transfuse his blood into Ethaniel. Thorber: No. We take care of Ethaniel first. Dr. Tremblay: Alright, we've got to do it now. <> Dr. Tremblay: Thorber's condition is more advanced than I thought. Laura: But it's still going to work, right? <> Byder: It is working! Look. Dr. Tremblay: It's working. Byder: Yes! <> ---Shot of ship--- ---Inside--- Dr. Tremblay: Deep breath. <> Dr. Tremblay: Excellent. Two lungs, one heart. Everything seems to be in working order. Ethaniel: Thanks doctor. Dr. Tremblay: You have no idea how good it felt to be practicing medicine again. Ethaniel: How's Thorber? <> Ethaniel: What? What is it? Laura: I think it's best if the doctor tells you. Ethaniel: What happened, is he alright or not? Dr. Tremblay: There was only enough vaccine for one of you. We thought we could cure you and then transfuse your blood into Thorber. It worked to an extent, he started to become human again, but not all the way. The vaccine didn't cure Thorber completely. He's starting to revert back to his Theran form... very slowly. I'll give him six to eight months. Ethaniel: I have to find him. Laura: You can't see him. Dr. Tremblay: Any contact with Thorber could reinfect you. We have no clean alien blood to create a new vaccine with. Laura: You can't see him again. Laura (to Dr. Tremblay): Thankyou. Byder: Thanks doc. <> Laura: I almost lost you. <> Ethaniel: Laura, what you saw. That isn't what I am. Laura: If I didn't know that already, I wouldn't be here. Ethaniel: He's going to die alone, isn't he. All this time, only to find out my brother is poison to me. Not even Banning can think of something as cruel as that. <> ---END TITLES---
